    A Renewal of Politics?
Was the turn of the millennium accompanied by widespread opposition to politics? A valid and unavoidable question, since the political process is under attack at all levels: from war and violence; due to the rise of religious, nationalistic, or communitarian tribalism; because of the lack of progress of regional groupings such as the European Union; since the unilateralist policies of the most powerful can only contribute to a rising level of extremism of the part of the weakest; through unchecked capitalism; and finally, as a result of the disillusionment of those who, driven to cynicism, simply walk away from any involvement in politics, in effect opting out of their roles as engaged citizens. Those who are active in the political process cannot be merely shocked by these trends: they are now called upon to renew their practices. They must simultaneously be closer to average citizens and respond to the new challenges of globalization, just as they must reconcile the demands of universalistic values with the emergence of new group identities. It is through such a process of interactive analysis of the global and local levels that several scholars from eight countries have contributed to this study of the crisis and renewal of politics.
