    The work of societies
"'For a long time, I thought I was living in a society', observes the author, but the traditional representation of society is vanishing as globalisation and modernity itself come to the fore.
Thus, society is no longer conceived of as being the advance of a process of integration of a social structure, a homogeneous national culture and an all-powerful political sovereignty. Henceforth, individuals who are increasingly mobilized are given the task of doing what society no longer does for them.
This does not mean to say that societies disappear. They do impose forms of domination. They continue to establish the difficulties which individuals confront. They remain the basic context for social criticism and social movements.
It is this 'work of societies' which we have to understand in order to construct the representations and political forces which enable us to live together."
