    Sociology of Bordeaux
Each town is unique because it crystallizes a history, a particular dynamic of relationships between social groups and an interplay of political relationships which make up a specific culture and personality. Bordeaux is not an exception to this rule. Although the port and, in particular, the vineyards still make important contributions to the economy and the sociology of Bordeaux, the town is no longer restricted to the traditional image of one of merchants and middle class people.
Today, the urban area of Bordeaux extends beyond the boundaries of the historic town making a town which is more 'American' in style and more modern than the stereotypes associated with its history and its provincial memory would lead us to believe. New industries and new middle classes in the service sector are emerging in an urban area where there are also pockets of poverty in the making. The former trader middle class is gradually giving way to a politico-administrative ruling class which now shapes the destiny of the town.
This book attempts to demonstrate how the town functions and how it is changing.
