Discrimination and ethnicisation. Combatting racism in Europe
In contemporary multi-ethnic European societies, the questions of racism, discrimination and cultural difference represent a key issue. The increase in mobility and migratory flows which are at the heart of globalisation do indeed lead to a rise in "the diversity of mankind". However, most of the time its visibility is considered to be a threat; this can be seen by the development, particularly since the Islamist attacks in New York on 11th September 2001, of analyses predicting catastrophes as a result of intercultural encounters: references are made to "cultural shocks" and clashes of civilisation. In actual fact, the ethno-cultural dimension does consolidate many fears because it is a characteristic of the intensification of the competition between individuals and "communities" as well as of the social and cultural disintegration of societies which are themselves becoming fragmented and segregated.
Nevertheless, given the complexity of the "ethnic question", the campaign against racism and discrimination and, more generally, the management of cultural diversity are primarily linked to political choices. Over and above the anti-social and de-humanising processes which it describes, this book endeavours to answer the following question: would it not be possible today to rethink the anti-racist and anti-discrimination campaign with a view to constructing a democratic political space which European societies would share and thus find an issue to a form of aggressive, uncontrolled globalisation which tends to increase tensions around identities?
