    Anti-Semitism in Contemporary France
Assaults, desecration of tombs, insults, threats: are we witnessing the return of anti-Semitism in today's France? Based on a two-year study carried out by a team of a dozen sociologists, Michel Wieviorka provides a detailed analysis and addresses the questions raised by the recent cases of anti-Semitism. Is anti-Semitism in France linked to the presence of a large Muslim population, as is commonly thought? Does it derive from the intersection of Islamic fundamentalism and anti-Zionist far-left groups? Is it reinforced by isolationist communal attitudes among French Jews? Is it more virulent when a far-right group remains powerful, as in the case of Alsace? Can it spread within the school system? In each case, a field study leads to a concrete, nuanced reply, which provides insights into the origins and the real extent of the phenomenon of hatred towards Jews.
