A Post-Critical Sociology of the Media
While the question of mass culture was central to the preoccupations of French researchers at the end of the 1950s and in the 1960s, this has now been abandoned if not, discredited. In the meantime, elsewhere in the world, a cultural turn had been reached. Breaking with the cultural legitimism and the critical theory inherited from the Frankfurt School, new methodological horizons have been opened up propitious to the exploration of the imaginary worlds produced in a continual stream and an increasingly transnationalised form by the cultural industries which are the contemporary forms of collective representations.
For the past ten years, a new generation of researchers has been endeavouring to re-evaluate the French post-critical sociological tradition (Edgar Morin, Alain Touraine, and Bruno Latour) and its rapprochement with the most recent proposals in Cultural Studies, Gender Studies and Postcolonial Studies. In this book, we have, as an extension of these studies, neither a case study nor a textbook but a theoretical and methodological redefinition of an object and field of research, through its genesis and most recent developments with the aim of revealing the conditions for a post-critical start-up of research into the cultural industries, the public sphere and media cultures.
